I am a generative artist. My medium is code. To be more precise, I use the Javascript programming language to generate SVG’s (Scalable Vector Graphics); which, for my purposes, are static two-dimensional compositions. I’ve recently decided to call these: paintings; despite using no paint or paint brushes. Programming is a world of abstractions and metaphors. Previously I’d called them “pieces” or “designs”.

My paintings are mostly straight lines. Although there are instances, in my Twisted Geometries modality, where those straight lines form some nice curves. I also have 90 degree curves in the Knots tiles. I plan to explore more curves in future work.

I currently have three different programs, or modalities: Twisted Geometries, Metropolis, and Knots. Although each came about in its own way, I’ll attempt to abstract out a process.

I conceptualize a system of rules. I have some idea of what it might look like. I code the rules. I see what it actually looks like. I might iterate on the rules. This is my feedback loop.

There are usually some parameters within the rules, which allow for sometimes startling variability in designs. As I explore the different patterns I can elicit, I might get ideas for new rules or effects. More programming.

One of the challenges of a generative art practice is to develop a nomenclature for the different aspects of the work. This helps in communicating about the process, understanding it, and reasoning about it.

In spite of the modalities being based on random numbers, the rules impose order. You can especially see this tension between order and chaos in the higher order Metropolis paintings. I expect the output from a given modality to be consistently compelling.

In addition to continuing the exploration of my existing modalities, I look forward to developing new modalities. Some of these will include the existing modalities, or interface with them in novel ways.
